03 / HOW FEES WORK

Size × rate. That’s the fee.

You pay for the space your transaction uses. Sending more BTC does not, by itself, make the fee higher.

ceil(sat/vB × vB) = fee in sats
01

Virtual bytes, explained

Virtual size is transaction weight divided by four, rounded up. Inputs, outputs and their scripts change the size. A wallet can estimate it before you send.

02

Why the queue matters

Unconfirmed transactions wait in nodes’ mempools. When more compete for block space, a higher fee rate can help a transaction get selected sooner.

03

An estimate, not a deadline

Recommendations use the source’s projected blocks and fee policy. Blocks arrive at uneven intervals, and new transactions can overtake yours.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few quick answers

What does sat/vB mean?

Satoshis per virtual byte. It is a fee rate, not the total fee. Multiply it by your transaction’s virtual size, then round up to a whole satoshi.

How much is a Bitcoin transaction fee?

It depends on the fee rate and transaction size. For example, 140 vB at 2 sat/vB costs 280 sats, or 0.00000280 BTC. The calculator shows the current fiat estimate.

Does a higher fee guarantee the next block?

No. New transactions, miner choices and the time until the next block can change confirmation timing. These recommendations are estimates.

Why is the minimum estimate different from my wallet?

The source’s recommendation is not a universal network minimum. Wallets and nodes can use different fee rounding, relay policies and local mempool limits.
