Lightning channel backups and safe recovery
Understand why recovery words may be insufficient and why an old channel database must not be restarted casually.
The quick answer
A Lightning wallet can need channel-specific recovery information in addition to key backups. Follow the recovery procedure for your exact implementation; formats and guarantees are not universal.
A channel backup is not a balance snapshot
For LND, a static channel backup helps locate peers and request channel closure after data loss. It does not restore the latest live channel state. Recovery can depend on peers, on-chain fees and waiting periods.
Step by step
- 1
Identify the wallet's recovery model
Read its official documentation. Record required key material, channel backup format and any separate passphrase or service dependency.
- 2
Maintain backups as instructed
Keep protected copies away from the node. Check the required updates when channels change; do not assume a successful seed backup covers every channel.
- 3
Recover without replaying stale state
After a failure, preserve available files and follow the documented data-loss recovery flow. Do not start an old channel database alongside the current node or improvise a restore.
Worked example
Having recovery words plus an LND static channel backup may enable recovery through channel closures. It does not mean payments resume instantly with the previous open channels.

A related question
Can every Lightning wallet use LND's backup procedure?
No. Custodial wallets and other self-custodial implementations have different recovery models. Use instructions for the wallet and version you actually operate.
