BTC, sats and fiat: convert Bitcoin units correctly
Convert satoshis to BTC, check decimal places and separate an amount of bitcoin from its changing fiat price.
The quick answer
One BTC is 100,000,000 satoshis. Divide sats by 100,000,000 to get BTC; multiply BTC by that number to get sats.
The unit changes, not the ownership
BTC and sats describe the same asset at different scales. Fiat is a separate price quote. A fee rate in sat/vB is neither your balance nor a percentage of the payment.
Step by step
- 1
Identify the displayed unit
Check whether your wallet shows BTC, sats or another denomination. Do not assume a large integer is a BTC amount.
- 2
Convert before confirming
Use the satoshi converter and compare the result with your wallet. On-chain BTC amounts have at most eight decimal places.
- 3
Check the fiat reference
Select the right currency and check when its exchange rate was updated. Treat the fiat result as a quote, not a guaranteed sale price.
Worked example
25,000 sats = 0.00025 BTC. At an illustrative 80,000 currency units per BTC, that is 20 units before fees.

A related question
Can I send less than one satoshi on-chain?
An on-chain output uses whole satoshis, subject to wallet and relay limits. Lightning can account in millisatoshis internally; that does not create fractional-satoshi on-chain outputs.
