Setting up a recoverable Bitcoin multisig wallet

Understand a 2-of-3 policy, independent signers and why recovery needs wallet configuration as well as keys.

Three independent signers share a policy requiring any two valid signatures.
Three independent signers share a policy requiring any two valid signatures.

The quick answer

Multisig requires a specified number of distinct key signatures. A 2-of-3 wallet can spend with any two of its three keys when the required wallet policy is available.

Redundancy must include the policy

Back up the threshold, script type, cosigner public keys, derivation information and wallet descriptor or equivalent configuration. One cosigner's recovery words alone do not describe the entire wallet.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Design independent failure protection

Choose a supported policy and independently generated keys. Avoid keeping all devices and backups in one place. Consider who must cooperate and how heirs recover.

  2. 2

    Verify the shared configuration

Register or check the same policy on each signer. Compare receive addresses on trusted devices before funding.

  3. 3

Rehearse recovery with a small wallet

Test signing with the intended threshold and restoring the configuration using the official workflow. Preserve copies of configuration and required secrets securely.

Worked example

In 2-of-3, losing one key need not stop spending if the other two and the configuration survive. Losing two keys leaves only one, which cannot satisfy the policy.

A related question

Does multisig always make a wallet safer?

No. It can reduce particular theft or loss risks, but adds configuration and coordination risks. An untested setup can make recovery harder.
