Practicing Bitcoin with testnet and signet

Try receiving, sending and backup checks on a separate practice network before risking real BTC.

A separate practice wallet receives test coins and rehearses a Bitcoin payment.

The quick answer

Test networks let you practice with coins that are not mainnet BTC. Bitcoin signet and testnet4 are separate networks; your wallet must support the one you choose.

Same ideas, different coins

Practice networks have different chain histories and can have different block behavior. Their coins do not turn into spendable mainnet bitcoin. An address prefix alone may not distinguish every test network.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Choose a supported practice network

Read your wallet's official instructions and create a separate practice wallet. Clearly label the network and backup.

  2. 2

    Receive a small test amount

Use a reputable faucet for that exact network. It needs a receive address, never your recovery words. Do not buy test coins as if they were BTC.

  3. 3

    Practice the complete flow

Send, inspect the transaction and try the documented backup check. Learn the screens before returning to your separately backed-up mainnet wallet.

Worked example

A signet wallet showing 0.01 test BTC does not add 0.01 BTC to your mainnet holdings or portfolio value.

A related question

Are testnet and signet interchangeable?

No. Even when address formats look similar, balances and transactions belong to their particular network.
